The demand for marble remains high because of the beautiful finish it adds to any space. Since marble comes in a variety of designs and colors, you can match them to the color scheme of the room. All marble slabs are unique which is great for those who want to stand out. Marble is also heat-resistant which makes it perfect for the kitchen where hot pans are frequently placed on countertops. It is also a popular choice for fireplaces since the surface does not discolor due to the heat and can withstand occasional sparks.
Marble is a porous material and can absorb wine, oil and other liquid spills which are extremely hard to get out. Even in bath rooms substances such as nail polish and make up can stain the marble countertop. Even though sealers are easily available, the process should be repeated every few years but if it is not done properly then staining is a very likely possibility. Another disadvantage of having a marble countertop installed is that it is not very durable and prone to chipping and scratching. Sharp knives and blades can leave etches on the surface while heavy item may even chip a corner or completely break it off.
Granite is a natural beauty with a timeless appeal unmatched by any other countertop material. They add a certain quality to any room and with over 20 shades to choose from, it fits perfectly with any kitchen, bath room or living room. Granite is durable and can withstand scratches, however it may dull sharp kitchen knives. The material is also heat-resistant and can be installed next to stoves and cooking ranges. Placing warm pans and pots or hair-styling rods will not be a problem with granite. Granite is resistant to stains and does not absorb liquids either if it is sealed properly. A professional installer or even you yourself can seal the granite while preserving its attractiveness.
The beauty and sturdiness comes at a price because if granite is not sealed properly it can be highly problematic. If the sealant fades away and the countertop is not resealed, the granite will become porous. This means it can absorb any liquid spilled on it and produce a stain which would be impossible to remove. A poorly sealed granite countertop can also become to festering ground for bacteria due to the surface’s open pores. Most granite countertops need to be resealed every year which adds a lot in maintenance costs. If it is not resealed regularly then the granite will begin to stain and ruin the state of any room it is installed in
Quartz is a manufactured material and has its own visual appeal. Through the manufacturing process, a wider range of colors can be achieved than natural stones. The engineered appearance is a rich and luxurious finish with depth that cannot be reproduced in other solid surfaces. Quartz is as durable as concrete or granite and it is not at risk of chipping or cracking. It is not as hard to the touch as other materials, which some people prefer. Quartz is non-porous and has a greater resistance to staining than granite or marble making it the perfect surface for countertops. It can withstand stains from juice, wine, oil, tomato and even coffee. Since, it is a non-porous surface there is no threat of bacteria and viruses growing on it. The quartz countertop is clean and appropriate for both bathroom and kitchen.
Since quartz is specifically created for countertops, it does not have any physical flaws however the one major cause for concern is the price. Another feature which might be taken as a drawback of quartz is that it has a contemporary look which might not fit well with most home decors. Those who prefer a natural material for their countertops will choose granite or marble over quartz.
